Ingredients:

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1/2 cup chana dal (split Bengal gram)
  • 1/4 cup urad dal (split black gram)
  • 2 tablespoons grated coconut
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Wash the rice and dals together under running water. Soak them in water for about 4 hours. Drain the water and grind the rice and dals into a coarse paste.
  2. Transfer the paste to a mixing bowl and add grated coconut, ginger paste, green chili, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well to form a smooth batter.
  3. Grease a steamer plate or a shallow dish with oil. Pour the batter into it and spread it evenly.
  4. Steam the batter in a steamer for about 20–25 minutes or until it is cooked through and firm to touch.
  5. Once cooked, remove the steamed batter from the steamer and let it cool for a few minutes. Cut it into desired shapes, such as squares or diamonds.
  6. Heat oil in a pan and shallow fry the cut faras until they turn golden brown and crispy on both sides.
  7. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with chutney or tomato sauce.
